What Colorado general contractors actually check on your certificate

· 5 min read

A certificate of insurance is a snapshot, not a contract. When a general contractor reviews yours before letting your crew on site, they are comparing it line by line against the insurance exhibit in the subcontract agreement.

Three items cause the majority of delays: additional insured status on both ongoing and completed operations, primary and non-contributory wording, and a waiver of subrogation in favor of the upstream party. Any one of those missing sends the certificate back.

The fix is upstream of the certificate itself. The endorsements have to exist on the policy, which means the requirements need to be reviewed before the policy is bound — not the morning the crew is scheduled.
